Is it bow tie or bow tie?
Although the terms 'bow tie' and 'bow tie' are often used interchangeably, we mean the same thing: a bow-shaped tie worn around the neck. In everyday language, 'bow tie' is slightly more common, while 'bow tie' sounds a bit more formal. Both refer to the same stylish accessory; the difference lies mainly in the name.
How to Tie a Bow Tie?
You can easily fasten a pre-tied bow tie with a clasp at the back of the neck. For a classic self-tie bow tie, you knot it yourself in just five steps:
- Hang the tie around your neck (under the collar). Ensure that the left end hangs about 4 to 5 cm lower than the right end.
- Cross the long end over the short end and pull it from bottom to top through the loop at your neck. Temporarily lay the long part over your shoulder to create space.
- Take the short (hanging) end and fold it horizontally at the widest point, forming the first 'wing' of the bow. Hold this middle against your windpipe.
- Let the long part (hanging over your shoulder) fall straight down over the centre of your horizontal wing. Now fold the sides of the bow forward, creating a small opening (loop) behind the bow.
- Fold the remaining wide part in half and push it through the loop at the back. Gently pull on the loops and ends to make the bow symmetrical.
When to Wear a Bow Tie?
You wear a bow tie at events where neatness and elegance are crucial, such as weddings, galas, black tie events, or formal dinners. You mainly wear this with a tuxedo or tailcoat. An eye-catching bow tie can also be a fun addition at a creative or festive theme. However, a bow tie is less suitable for a funeral unless it aligns with the deceased's style. In such cases, a classic necktie is more appropriate.
