It’s important to take good care of suede shoes. Rain, mud, and even snow are not good friends of suede. By paying attention to the following aspects, your shoes will remain in top condition and last longer.
#1 Always use a spray
By treating your with a protective spray immediately after purchase, you create a layer that repels dirt and oil. This significantly helps when trying to remove a stain later on. Especially during these autumn and upcoming winter months, this is important.
#2 Use shoe trees
It may sound old-fashioned, but to maintain the shape of your shoes, use shoe trees, preferably made of untreated wood. They prevent the shoes from deforming and absorb odor and moisture. Plus, it looks very neat for those of us with a slight touch of OCD.
#3 Brushing
After wearing your shoes, brush them with a soft brush. Small stains can be easily removed with a simple pencil eraser. It saves you from extensive brushing because the longer the stain remains, the more stubborn it becomes to remove.
#4 Keep your shoes dry
If your shoes still get wet, which is highly possible in a country like the Netherlands, wrap them in kitchen paper and place them in a dry spot with shoe trees. Avoid placing them too close to the heater as it can cause the leather to crack. Stubborn stains can be erased the next day.
#5 The shoemaker
If you don’t have time (read: don’t feel like it) for a thorough cleaning or if the damage is extensive, leave it to an expert and take your shoes to a shoemaker. They can revive your shoes completely using steam.
