The men’s polo shirt is an absolute classic that can no longer be left out of any modern man’s wardrobe. Every man would have worn a polo shirt at some point in his life, but where does the men’s polo shirt actually come from and how did it originate?

Origin of the men’s polo shirt

Originally from the 19th century, the polo shirt originated in Manipur, a state in the far northeastern part of India. British soldiers were stationed here and established the first polo club of the era here. Soon attention turned to their clothing because they tied collars to their t-shirts. The buttons would keep the collars from flapping up and down as the players galloped through the field during games. The men’s polo was really brought to life in the 19th century by French tennis champion René Lacoste who designed and introduced the polo to the general public. This was a huge success! The Lacoste name has become inextricably linked to the polo and Lacoste remains to this day one of the most important products of quality polo shirts. It was only in the 1960s that the polo shirt stepped out of its sporting context and became known in the street scene.

Many men use the polo as an alternative to the shirt, a shirt with a luxurious look. A men’s polo shirt can be worn both for business and casual. These shirts create a sporty atmosphere and give you a summer casual look. Wear a brightly colored polo shirt in the spring and choose a somewhat neutral color in the fall. Because of this versatility, polo shirts should not be missing from any men’s wardrobe these days.

Men’s long sleeve polo shirtsPolo met lange mouwen

Everyone knows the short sleeve polo shirts, but what about the long sleeve? It is a variant that is often worn especially in autumn. With a men’s long-sleeve polo shirt you will be comfortable both for business and leisure. Combine the polo shirt with chinos or sporty trousers when you don’t have appointments one day. Your outfit will be comfortable and you will look presentable. In your spare time, combine the long sleeve polo with tough jeans, bomber jacket, and rugged boots for the ultimate casual look.

A hit with men’s polos in floral print Polo met print

Previously, men’s polo shirts were always plain but that is no longer the case. Nowadays they come in all kinds of colors and prints, anything goes these days. For men, you currently have polos with stripes, checks, or a fancy floral design. The floral print is extremely suitable for summer days, you can even wear it with shorts. The nice thing about a men’s polo shirt with a floral design is that this type of shirt is a nice mix of casual and business and can therefore be combined with different garments. You can choose to wear the polo shirt with jeans or chinos with a pair of nice sneakers, creating a casual look. Or wear your polo shirt for business combined with trousers, a nice jacket, and a pair of neat men’s shoes, to further enhance the business style. A floral print polo is a hit because of its different characters for the right occasion.

The buttons of a men’s polo shirt

Buttons define your outfit. The buttons of a polo determine how casual, chic or fashionable you make your outfit. The general rule is that you should button at least one bargain. having all the buttons open makes you look unkempt and sloppy. Three buttons closed exudes a stylish fashion vibe.
Everything in between can pass for casual, sporty, or chic. Of course, depending on the rest of your outfit.

Different fits of a men’s polo shirt

Polo shirts have many different fits. The three most popular fits are now explained:

  • Slim-Fit
A Slim-Fit fit ensures that the polo shirt falls fitted along the body while allowing sufficient freedom of movement.
  • Modern-Fit
A Modern-Fit polo shirt falls slightly fitted along the body and provides ample room for movement.
  • Regular-Fit
Polos with a Regular-Fit fit fall straight along the body and provide the most freedom of movement.
