The history of the overshirt
The overshirt is essentially a garment that combines multiple clothing items in one. It’s a shirt-jacket, sometimes even a shirt-blazer or a shirt-vest. While it was originally made from heavy cotton fabrics, you can now find it in comfortable stretch versions and responsible models made from materials like recycled polyester.
The concept of the overshirt dates back to the previous century, where it was initially worn by soldiers and mountain climbers. In high mountain environments, an extra insulating layer was very welcome. The overshirts of that time were made from heavy cotton and featured large, secure pockets.
In the late ’80s, the overshirt began to transition into a fashion item. This transformation brought changes to its models, colors, and fabrics, aligning them with the fashion trends of the era. In the ’90s, it slowly disappeared from the fashion scene, but it made a comeback last year, fitting with the contemporary fashion styles.
Different styles of overshirts
An overshirt is available in various styles and fabrics. We’ll highlight two styles for you to choose from:
Casual: Opt for an overshirt with buttons and a sturdy fabric, such as heavy cotton or flannel. A casual overshirt can also feature patterns like checks. Casual overshirts typically have large buttons.
Formal: Choose an overshirt made from a synthetic fabric. A formal overshirt is crafted from finer materials and features finer details like a zipper. Casual overshirts often have pockets, while formal overshirts do not.
Overshirt: fabrics and patterns
The large check pattern is characteristic of the overshirt. You can pair this with a plain t-shirt, slim-fit jeans, and sneakers. If you choose a solid-colored version, such as corduroy, you can wear a printed shirt underneath (solid works too), along with a good pair of chinos and stylish Chelsea boots. This creates a completely different style that’s less casual but still well-dressed.
