When wearing a suit, it’s naturally the intention to look your best. You don’t don a complete suit for no reason. You’re clearly on a mission: dress to impress. If you frequently wear a suit, you’re aware of certain style rules to consider. One of them is choosing the right tie knot. There are many different types of knots to tie your necktie, but when do you opt for which knot? We’ll explain!
It’s all in the details
The choice of which tie knot you make depends on two things: the thickness of your necktie and the size of your collar. It’s also advisable to take a look at the shape of your face. Simply put, you’re better off with narrow knots if you have a slim and long face, and you should go for a wide and/or thick knot if you have a round face or a broad neck. This visually balances the overall look.
Through thick and thin
In recent years, narrow neckties have been in vogue. There’s a good chance you also have a few skinny ties in your closet. The rule here is simple: generally, with a narrow necktie, opt for a slim knot. The opposite holds true for wide ties. Additionally, it’s wise to consider the thickness of the fabric of your necktie. Logically, your knot becomes larger when the tie’s fabric is thick. Definitely something to keep in mind!
In the collar
Crucially, pay close attention to the collar of your dress shirt. Nothing looks as untidy as a massive knot with a narrow collar or a knot that completely disappears in the rest of your outfit. We’ve put together some examples for you:
Widespread collar
The widespread collar, perhaps better known as the pointed collar, is likely the most common collar in your wardrobe. Most dress shirts feature this classic collar. With the widespread collar, you have a bit more space for your tie knot, so you can opt for a slightly wider knot. Choose a single Windsor or a Pratt knot.
Cutaway collar
With the cutaway collar, the points are farther apart than on a ‘normal’ collar. This leaves more room for a tie knot. You can go all out with a wide knot and a broad necktie here. Opt for the double Windsor. It might require a bit more effort, but it will definitely make you stand out. Ensure your knot is tight and on point because with this collar, it’s clearly visible. You wouldn’t want it to look messy, of course.
Kent collar
With the Kent collar, the points are slightly outward, making it also suitable for wearing without a tie. Opt for a Four-in-Hand knot here, a narrow, more discreet, and slightly asymmetric knot. This knot can be worn well by anyone but looks especially good on men with a shorter neck because the knot tapers slimly, making your neck appear a bit longer.
Suitable accessories for your necktie
A tie clip is a must-have for every man who regularly wears a suit. Opt for a simple model for a classic look or a more distinctive tie clip for a stylish twist. A tie clip should be ¾ the width of the necktie. Wear your tie clip between the third and fourth button of your dress shirt, and it will stay perfectly in place.
