Nothing is more unflattering than a suit that doesn’t fit. We often see men wearing suits that are too big, too small, too tight or too old-fashioned. Luckily, after reading this blog, you won’t have to worry about that anymore, because we’ve compiled the most important tips for you.
The jacket
The shoulders of your jacket should not overlap and should be as close to your upper arms as possible. Just a little space should be left so that you can still move freely in your tight suit. And even if you wear your jacket open most of the time, the buttons of your jacket should still be able to close without tension. This way, you can neatly follow the etiquette rules at a formal event or a first meeting. Nowadays, the suit is allowed to be a little more “tactful” at the waist. This means that the suit follows the line of your body and shows more silhouette. So, for a slim-fitting suit (very fashionable!), it makes sense to have a slight pleat around the buttonhole. Also, the back should be nice and smooth and the slits can be closed nicely.
Finally, the sleeve length: the sleeve length of the jacket should end just behind the wrist. In practice, this is almost always between 12 and 14 cm from the tip of the thumb to the edge of the sleeve. About 1 cm of the shirt cuff should then protrude downward and just touch the base of the hand.
The trousers
The pants should fit well, tight but comfortable. At the buttocks, the pants should fit and when you stand upright, they should fall on the heel of your shoe. Small tip The waistband of the pants should be tight enough that you can easily slide your hands into the pockets.
TIPS
#1 Feeling is allowed
Pay attention to the fabric! The secret to a comfortable suit is indeed a good fabric. Feel the fabric, its texture and possible elasticity. Wool is inherently an elastic fiber because of the elasticity of the thread. In short, wool wears most comfortably for any occasion and any season.
#2 Choose colors
Think carefully about what color you buy. Opt for colors that are easy to match, like charcoal gray and dark blue. Other colors get boring quickly and are not so easy to combine, like anthracite gray or dark blue. The British rule of thumb “Don’t wear brown into The City” applies to some extent here in the Netherlands. Brown is a good color for special occasions or when you know how best to combine it with other colors, so get good advice before you buy.
#3 The tailor is your best friend
The tailor is your best friend. When you buy a ready-to-wear size, there’s a good chance that, for example, the legs of your pants or the sleeves of your jacket will be too long or too short. No problem with Suitable! If the rest of the suit fits perfectly, you can always have it altered.
