6 ironing tips for the modern man

Whether you’re ironing just your shirts and suits or your entire wardrobe, there’s no denying that wrinkle-free ironing is an art. However, this household chore can be mastered, even if you’re not particularly handy. We’re here to help you get started with the following six practical ironing tips:

1. Good tools make all the difference

Choose a steam iron; the steam allows it to effortlessly glide over your clothes. This also helps extend the lifespan of your garments as they experience less wear and tear. A sturdy ironing board with a thick, soft top layer provides that extra bit of comfort, making it easier to iron your clothes to perfection. Try standing on a cushion while ironing, and you’ll notice how it speeds up the process. The cushion helps relieve tension in your back and legs.

2. Use the right water

Many areas have calcium rich water. This can lead to limescale buildup on your iron and potentially leave white stains on your clothes over time. To prevent this, it’s advisable to use spring water or filtered water for ironing purposes.

3. Check the laundry instructions

In the laundry instructions, you can find the recommended ironing temperature. The number of dots on the laundry label corresponds to the dots on the temperature dial of your iron. Linen can be ironed at the highest setting, while cotton requires a slightly lower heat, and wool and silk should preferably be ironed on a low temperature. For garments that are very dry, lightly mist them with water, roll them up, and place them in a plastic bag for an hour. Additionally, there are special sprays available.

4. Inside out, not upside down

Prevent discoloration, damage, or potential bleeding of prints by turning your clothes inside out before ironing. Hang cotton trousers upside down by the ankles after washing to avoid difficulties during ironing. Make sure your garment is positioned singly on the ironing board without any fabric underneath, as this can create wrinkles. For stubborn creases, use extra steam to iron them away for a wrinkle-free result. For an extra smooth finish, place a damp cloth on the fabric, iron over it, and repeat the process with brown paper. The fabric will become more firm and maintain its shape, giving it a professionally steamed appearance.

5. Start at the beginning

A good start is half the battle, so begin by ironing the collar. Unbutton your shirt and lay the collar flat. Iron both the inside and outside of the collar, using extra steam for optimal results. For shoulders, it’s recommended to place one shoulder over the rounded edge of the ironing board. This allows you to easily smooth out the fabric. If you have stubborn creases or want to create a sharp crease, you can press the garment. Simply place a damp cloth on the area that needs ironing. Set the iron to the highest heat setting and press it briefly (4 to 6 seconds) on the damp cloth, repeating if necessary.

6. The final touch

Button up your shirt, lay the sleeve flat along the side seam, and use your hand to smooth out the fabric before gently ironing over it. When ironing pleats, it’s advisable to place a piece of cardboard under the fabric to prevent accidental imprints from the iron. Finally, go over the cuff one more time, and your shirt is ready to do business. After ironing, it’s best to place the iron upright (on its back) rather than on a metal rack. Metal dissipates heat faster from the iron, causing it to cool down more quickly.

Pssst, an extra tip…

Running out of time or traveling? Then non-iron shirts are your solution. These garments have undergone a special treatment, so all you have to do is let the shirt dry on a hanger and put it on. The heat from your body will smooth out the fibers, allowing you to start your day wrinkle-free without even touching an iron! However, keep in mind that wrinkle-free shirts won’t stay wrinkle-free forever. After approximately 30 to 50 washes, they may require some ironing. Visit one of our stores and let us inform you about the latest trends in non-iron shirts.
