How to remove sweat stains: the best tips
Yellow sweat stains on your shirt are a pain, but they’re usually easy to remove. Discover the best tips to get sweat marks out of both white and dark clothing.

Gently rub some rinse aid onto the yellow sweat marks/streaks on your clothing, let it soak in for a moment and then put the garment in your washing machine and wash it in the normal way. Usually the stains disappear from your clothing after one wash; if that is not the case, you can use a dishwasher tablet. You place the dishwasher tablet in the drum of your washing machine, and your laundry then goes on top.

Many tips are meant for white garments, but sweat stains can also appear in black or other dark garments. These are then often white or grey stains. This too can be remedied by letting the garment soak for a few hours in a bucket of cold water and a generous splash of cleaning vinegar. Then simply wash and the stains are gone. An extra advantage of cleaning vinegar is that this product also neutralises perspiration odour.

A remedy from grandma's time but still for sale and environmentally friendly. First dampen the garment or the stain and rub the soap over the yellow sweat stains; also take the collar and cuffs of your shirt along while you are at it. This way you ensure a spotless white shirt. It is best, though, to let the soap soak in overnight before it goes in the wash.

Just the old-fashioned pot of green soap: besides being super cheap and environmentally friendly, it works fine for removing sweat stains and also many other stains from your clothing. Are they somewhat older stains? Then it is best to put the clothing, wet, in a plastic bag after rubbing it in with green soap and let it soak for 1 or 2 days for the best result.

Mix the soda with water so that a kind of paste forms. Then rub this paste over the stains and let it soak in for about two hours. After this, apply some detergent to the treated stains and rub this in well too. Finally, wash the garment or garments in the normal way in your washing machine again.

Yes, this may sound a little strange, but with aspirins you can really remove sweat stains too. Put two aspirins in a mug of hot water and let the aspirins dissolve. Then rub this mixture onto the stains with, for example, a nail brush and let it soak in for a few hours. After that you can simply wash the garment according to your normal wash programme.

A lemon is also perfectly fine to use for removing stains. Mix the lemon juice with water in equal amounts. Rub this mixture over the stain, let it work in for a moment and then wash normally in your washing machine. You can also use a lemon soap, available at health food shops among others. With this lemon soap you also rub in the sweat marks, but first wet the garment and, after rubbing it in, also let it soak for a while.

Better still… some tips to prevent those nasty sweat stains.

  • Choose a deodorant that works best for you, a matter of trying it out. Always make sure that, after applying the deodorant under your armpits, you let it dry properly before you put on your clothing.
  • Wear an undershirt/t-shirt under your shirt; this can already prevent sweat stains from forming there.
  • If there are still yellow stains in your clothing after washing, do not put it in the dryer. The dryer causes hard sweat stains. You then can hardly get the sweat stains out anymore.
