What is a cumberbund
The cummerbund is a type of sash that originally comes from India and reached Europe through the British presence there. In English it is spelled cummerbund; in the Netherlands, cumberband has become the usual spelling. You wear it around your waist with a tuxedo, as an alternative to a waistcoat. So you choose one of the two, never both at the same time.
When do you wear a cummerbund?
Especially when it is warm, a cummerbund is a more comfortable alternative to a waistcoat: you keep the neat line around your waist without an extra layer across your back. You wear it at smart occasions, such as a gala. In the past cummerbunds were always made of silk; nowadays there are also more affordable versions in polyester. The pleats point upwards, which goes back to the days when men kept their theatre tickets in them.
