The history of the bucket hat

It will probably surprise you that this iconic headwear has existed since the early twentieth century. It was originally designed for Irish farmers and fishermen. Because of its special design, the hat kept your neck dry during rain and protected your eyes from the sun. In addition, the bucket hat retains warmth in winter and keeps you cool in summer. Because you could easily fold up the hat and take it with you, it was above all a practical garment. Not surprising, then, that it was often used during the Second World War and the Vietnam War.

From the countryside to the city

The bucket hat as we know it only became popular among the general public in the 1960s. The fisherman's hat really broke through as a stylish garment during the 1980s when various hip-hop artists started wearing it. Since then, it has remained part of streetwear culture to varying degrees. The biggest advantage of bucket hats is that there's no wrong way to wear them. Some choose to wear it at an angle, back to front, inside out or loosely on their head. In addition, you can decorate them with buttons, embroidery and patches to make it completely your own.
