Stay cool this summer with these 10 tips

Dutch men are used to dressing for cold weather: coats, knitwear and anything practical and warm just feels natural. That’s partly why we sometimes forget what’s appropriate in summer. So what should you wear when the sun is really out? How do you avoid turning into a tomato the moment you step outside? And how do you prevent sweaty feet? These tips will help you through the hot days of summer:

Wear the right fabrics

It sounds simple, but one of the biggest mistakes men make during the summer months is wearing fabrics that are mainly worn in winter. In cold weather you can wear as much wool and cashmere as you like. In summer, however, you'd rather not turn up at the office already sweating. Invest in clothing made of breathable fabrics such as linen and cotton. You won't regret it.

Switching up short sleeves

Nice, a beautiful and comfortable T-shirt. But in summer you have many more choices. From shirts, jerseys, polos and even pullovers to the short-sleeved shirt, you have a huge amount of choice. These garments can immediately make your summer outfit a good deal dressier, so that you always look stylish.

Seriously, ‘invisible socks’ are totally fine

You can choose to step into your shoes barefoot, because that looks 'more masculine'. Hot, sweaty, dirty, smelly feet are really very masculine, but less pleasant. In short, you can wear little socks, but make sure they stay invisible. Also here, make sure you go for breathable material, or flip-flops ;-).

These are the shoes you need for summer

If you want to wear sandals this summer, that's completely fine. However, during a typically Dutch summer you definitely need three pairs of shoes. The first pair of shoes that shouldn't be missing are white sneakers. These provide high wearing comfort and endless combining fun. Next, the loafer, perfect for a slightly informal outfit. The third pair: suede shoes. These look good under a suit, but also under a T-shirt and a chino.

Comfortable fit

The baggy trouser trend maybe goes a bit far when you don't work in fashion or feature in a Kraantje Pappie music video, but for summer it's nice to know that trousers may be a bit wider again.

A blazer

When it comes to dressing smartly, a blazer is a really good choice in summer. A blazer looks stylish and gives you a nonchalant yet dressed-up look. It even looks good over a simple T-shirt.

Don’t shy away from lighter shades

We Dutch are so used to dark shades that we forget how to wear colour. Use the summer as a period to experiment a bit with colour, for example a sky-blue jacket with a sand-coloured chino and white shirt. It will surprise you how easy it actually is.

Choose the right deodorant

Many men still often go wrong when it comes to deodorant. Far too often we still see men with white streaks on their clothing, something you can easily change. Go for a specially developed white-streak-free deodorant. In summer, and actually in winter too, choose a deodorant without an overpowering scent; women will be grateful to you.

Visit the barber

When you have a lot of long, thick hair, summer is an absolute nightmare; it's very hard to keep your head cool when you're sitting on the terrace. Go to the barber to have your winter coat thinned out and ask for thin back and sides. No, gentlemen, not the shaved-in-with-little-figures haircut; that's so 1990 ;-).

Buy (at least) two quality sunglasses

There's a very good chance that you'll break one of the two at a festival or forget it on the terrace. Make sure you always have a spare pair of sunglasses at home. Especially when you're on holiday and there's a lot of sand around. An investment you won't regret.
